Screen Free Week 6/6/16

no-tvBrookside Place School will kick-off its SCREEN-FREE WEEK on June 6th and run through the evening of Friday, June 10, 2016. (just in time for BPS Movie Night!)

Screen Free Week is a national movement that encourages children and families to turn off TVs, tablets and video games and turn on to other fun activities.

To encourage participation, local businesses are offering special discounts and sessions as a way to incentivize students to participate.

Fire Me Up! Studios, Garwood Lanes, Vanilla Cream Beanery, Rustic Mill Diner are just a few of the participating businesses. In addition, we will be organizing some FREE group activities such as “Brookside Blanket Bingo”  and a Hands of Life martial arts class and demo at BPS.

We also encourage you to do screen-free activities with your families at home. Here are some ideas:

> Board games
> Make dinner together or bake a cake
> Chess or checkers
> Play Frisbee or have a catch
> Charades or 20 Questions
> Do a puzzle
> Go fishing
> Tell ghost stories by a fire pit
> Read outside
> Write a book or play or comic book
> A walk, run or ride around the park
>Take a walk to downtown Cranford

Studies show that children who watch less TV are more likely to read well and to be physically fit. Turning off screens also allows for more family time. Each week American children spend more time in front of screens than they do in school! Scree-free Week is a great way to jump start our kids into more reading, learning and active play.
